Fibre fans create vibrant exhibition
The New Plymouth Creative Fibre group is holding its biennial exhibition at JD Reid Gallery (upstairs) 33A Devon St, New Plymouth.
This exhibition, which coincides with the Taranaki Powerco Garden Spectacular, provides an opportunity for members to showcase some of their most recent works.
Members are a diverse group of fibre enthusiasts, many of whom are skilled in multiple handcrafts such as spinning, knitting, crochet, weaving, raranga, felting, freeform sculpture, eco printing and dyeing.
Visitors will be able to see and touch a gorgeous array of pieces that are as diverse as their makers and include garments, accessories, jewellery, soft furnishings, wall hangings and art works. It is a wonderful exhibition of high quality pieces, where modern design and vibrant, contemporary colours sit comfortably alongside the natural fibres and natural dyes.
As part of the exhibition this year, the members were set a challenge – to use a quotation by Nora Roberts as inspiration to produce a piece of work:
‘‘Magic exists. Who can doubt it, when there are rainbows and wildflowers, the music of the wind and the silence of the stars? Anyone who has loved has been touched by magic. It is such a simple and such an extraordinary part of the lives we live.’’
So there is some real magic in the exhibition this year – from rainbows to snowflakes, wildflowers to stars.
Look out for the yarn bombed tree outside on Devon St to guide you to the gallery door.
Most works are available for sale and the exhibition is on until November 18. The Gallery is open 11am to 5pm weekdays, 10am to 2pm Saturday.
