Hammers right on the nail
Junior basketball in Waitara for Years 5 and 6 children is over for another year, with Huirangi Hammers winning the competition.
The presentation ceremony was held in the Memorial Hall and started with a fun game between two adult teams made up of parents/caregivers, coaches, teachers and supporters.
MC Paul Johnston opened the ceremony and thanked Betty Whalen, Lorraine Coster and Raewyn Nickson for all the work they put into organising the games and operating the score bench during the season. Bouquets of flowers were presented by pupils to the three women in appreciation of their work.
A special acknowledgement was made to Murray Blyde as the longest serving coach of any team involved in the competition. He has been coach of Mimi Cliff Bombers team for the past nine years, four of which Mimi were consecutive winners from 2013 to 2016.
Michelle Cronin, coach of the winning team and principal of Huirangi School, was also farewelled and thanked for her contribution over the past five and a half years. She has been appointed as principal of Merrilands School.
President Betty Whalen thanked all the coaches, supporters and referees for their contribution during the season. Awards:
