Plenty of oranges and lemons to go round

- DANICA MACLEAN

It’s that time of year again, Whangarei’s Lion’s clubs are calling for citrus fruit to send to Christchurch.

While citrus fruit grows abundantly in our backyards, the people of Christchurch aren’t so lucky.

Whangarei residents can donate their fruit on July 30 in the Forum North car park from 8am to 3pm.

Banana boxes collected from local supermarkets will be ready for packing.

Organiser Terry Ward says Mainfreight have agreed to pay for the shipment of 180 banana boxes full of citrus fruit.

Ward says people may like to pick up their own banana box, however if it can’t be filled from one household or from friends and neighbours, then people are asked to deliver the fruit in plastic bags.

He says keeping the fruits separate would also be helpful.

‘‘There is a pesky bug that drills into citrus. You may notice a small drilled hole, please do not give us these.’’

He says last year they received over 230 banana boxes worth, which equated to a bit over four tonnes.

The donations will be delivered to a fruit and vege co-op in Christchurch which started 23 years ago, but has grown especially since the earthquakes.
