- DANICA MACLEAN

Two Whangarei high school students have recently returned from a signing tour in Canada, as part of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Choir.

Whangarei Girls’ High School’s Phoebe Robertson and Pompallier Catholic College’s Matthew Brereton were members of the 56 singer strong choir who were the guest choir at this year’s International Choral Kathaumixw Festival in Powell River, British Columbia.

The 17-year-old Robertson says they were well received.

‘‘It was just awesome. I made all of these friends from around the world.’’

The choir spent two weeks in Canada, where after the festival they toured around Vancouver Island performing 10 concerts.

Students belong to the choir for two years, getting together for a week each school holidays and culminating in an international tour.

Robertson says when she auditioned in 2014 she was ‘‘amazed’’ when she got in.

‘‘It’s such a good thing to do, you learn so much.’’

She says she has gained many life-long friends.

Auditions for the 2017-2018 choir are being held from September 26 to October 4.
