Show Me Shorts, New Zealand’s leading international short film festival is set to screen at Kaitaia’s Te Ahu cinema.

Four screenings will be held from October 27 to 30.

The short film festival is now in its 11th year and will showcase 19 New Zealand short films, 23 international short films and five local music videos.

Rawene-born festival director Gina Dellabarca is ‘‘really excited’’ to bring the event to the Far North.

‘‘It is a really good way to inspire people to make their own stuff. There are heaps of interesting heartland stories that need to be told.

‘‘I am hoping people from the area start making some of their own.’’

Short films are required to be between two and 20 minutes in length, with most being around 10 minutes, Dellabarca says.

filmmaking, but there isn’t a lot of local access, despite them winning awards.

‘‘At the time I was managing the Academy Cinema in Auckland, so I knew at least one cinema would play them. Every year we have added more cinemas, we are trying to get it across New Zealand to more locations and give more access to short films.’’

About 300 entries were received in the first year with 1500 submissions received in 2016.

There will be 100 screenings at 20 cinemas from Kaitaia to Stewart Island, with the first-time addition of Antarctica.
