Local schools win awards

- BAYLEY MOOR

Cat food and spaghetti might seem like an unusual combination for an emergency survival kit.

Yet Ohaeawai Primary School Team Maunga students included these in their winning short-film for the Shortest Ever Tsunami Movie Competition, run by Far North Civil Defence. Nearby Oromahoe School were joint winners.

Ohaeawai teacher Sarah-Jayne Stevenson says the students worked on storyboards before using green screens and other technology to create their film.

‘‘The children were all so excited to win, it was a very informative and neat way to teach others.’’

Award-winning Bay of Islands film-maker Florian Habicht judged the competition.

Speaking on Oromahoe’s entry Higher Ground, ‘‘I didn’t want this film to stop.’’

Ohaeawai won a BBQ with Oromahoe winning a GoPro camera. Each student involved received a civil defence kit.

Head of Northland Civil Defence Emergency Management Colin Kitchen presented the awards to each school.
