working group’s statements are totally at odds with the council’s advice.

The council say a condition of the resource consent granted by NRC was that a safety barrier be constructed. Construction of a safety barrier that meets the requirement of the Building Act 2004 must be commenced by January 2017.

This was made crystal clear by mayor John Carter at the recent meeting in the Mangonui hall. Yet the chairperson of the working group says ‘‘It’s clear that it isn’t cut and dry with legislation, there is flexibility and council is encouraging us to use that flexibility.’’

The majority of residents just wanted to move forward, accept a barrier must be put in place and discuss an extension to the board walk, parking and street lighting.

The meeting was turned into a groundhog day scenario with the anti barrier group saying the same thing in many different ways. As the meeting was not advancing I left.
