Public support reopens butchery

- BAYLEY MOOR

A Far North butcher faced closing his shop after $6000 worth of meat was stolen - but with help from the community he is back on his feet.

Greg Jackson of Jacko’s Discount Meats in Moerewa has opened again following the over night burglary of his shop on April 25.

Along with the meat, around $400 cash was taken, as well as several knives and a laptop.

Jackson’s daughter, Jaime, started a Givealittle page in aid of her father and his business.

By May 8 this had raised over $6400.

Jackson says the support from throughout New Zealand was ‘‘absolutely amazing’’.

‘‘I am really rapt to be able to keep going.

‘‘It brings my faith back into the community and gives me back my livelihood.’’

The large hole used by the burglars to enter the shop in Moerewa’s shopping area, has been repaired, and further security measures will be put in place, Jackson says.

His message to the burglars: ‘‘Get a job, get a life.’’

The burglary in April, was the third in the three years Jackson has been operating in Moerewa.

Police are seeking information from the public in regards to the burglary. Contact Kerikeri Police on 09 4079211 or anonymously on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
