Knitters unite for a good cause

- STAFF REPORTER

A small bunch of Kaikohe women are knitting up a storm for St John ambulance service.

The Kaikohe Library Knitting Group are creating loads of knitted dolls, finger puppets, toys and teddy bears as their main project this year. Once they’ve filled a box or two, they will be given to St John Ambulance Service.

‘‘It’s for children either going in an ambulance or seeing a significant adult being taken off by an ambulance,’’ organiser Liz Hutchinson says. ‘‘They would be scared, and having a little soft toy will help make them feel comforted.’’

The group meet on the first Thursday of the month at their local library from 10.30am to 11.30am. It’s the second time they’ve knitted toys for St John and they have also created poppies for ANZAC day commemorations, beanies for the Women’s Refuge, and slippers for Kaikohe kindergarten.

St John Northern Regional Communications Advisor Jennifer Porter thanked the group. ‘‘We are so grateful to the Kaikohe knitting group for thinking of us, and taking the time to knit for children they have never met, who may need a little comfort. We appreciate the group’s kindness and will do our best to ensure the special donations go to good use.’’

Liz encourages anyone to join the group on Thursdays. They also have patterns and wool which can be taken home and the toys can be dropped off at the library.
