Youngsters from across North Canterbury were rewarded for their leadership qualities with a Sir Peter Blake Young Leader Award recently.

From Northland to Bluff, 460 primary schools celebrated their aspiring leaders with 55 coming from Canterbury, including 11 in North Canterbury. The Young Leader Awards acknowledge young people whose leadership uplifts the school community.

The North Canterbury recipients were Ella Scarlett (Amuri Area), Lucy Leech (Ashgrove), Abigail Pain (Cheviot), Eva Marryatt (Hurunui College), Holly Duff (Kaiapoi North), Bridie Kearns (Leithfield), Anna Dimmock (Loburn), Oliver Hillson-Barratt (Rangiora Borough), Georgia Gold (Sefton), Seamus Lohrey (St Joesph’s Rangiora) and Ella Spark (Woodend). The young leaders were nominated by either their class or a teacher and were presented with a prize pack, certificate and a Sir Peter Blake Medal. Sir Peter Blake Trust chief executive Shelley Campbell said the award aims to nurture and celebrate leadership in our young people.

‘‘The qualities these children display; humility, humour, inclusiveness, positivity and a team approach were all shown by Sir Peter himself,’’ Campbell said.

The Trust also awarded the Blake Leader Awards this month, with Waipara resident Ben Kepe’s one of six recipients.
