Canterbury police are cracking down on drivers flouting cellphone and seatbelt rules after an increase in preventabl­e deaths. Police said the number of fatal crashes where the person killed was not wearing a seatbelt had risen from an average of 57 per year to 92 in 2015. Between January and March this year, 41 per cent of those killed in road incidents were not restrained.
