Canterbury police are cracking down on drivers flouting cellphone and seatbelt rules after an increase in preventabl­e deaths.

The Northern Outlook asked how often do you see people on their phones behind the wheel?

Scott Nelson:

‘‘As a commercial driver in town I see at least a hundred plus a shift easily, and that’s a night shift, I almost cleaned out a single crewed cop car after he used his iPad to do a vehicle check on a car he was about to pull over once, thankfully I was able to see the screen light up and back off a bit in the lane next to him.’’

Chantel Cox:

Everyday in Kaiapoi. Mostly trades-people and more disappoint­ing mums on the school run. Shame on you all!’’

‘‘I see people using their phone in Christchur­ch all the time - even the boys in blue. It’s about bloody time they cracked down on it.’’

‘‘It’s so common. I think it is worse when they have the phone balanced on the steering wheel and they are obviously texting. I would be very happy if they did crackdown on this.’’
