RHS crowned premier champs

- JONATHAN LEASK

Rangiora High School girls 1st XI completed an unbeaten football season beating Burnside 2-1 for the Westpac Trust Cup in the Canterbury Premier schools’ final on Wednesday.

The unbeaten top-seeds, filled with Mainland Premier League talent, had home field advantage and went ahead 1-0 in the first half when a Macey Fraser corner was poked home by Abbey Neilson.

Prolific striker Gabi Rennie then broke the Burnside defence to hammer home for a two-goal buffer.

Burnside then got a penalty late in the second half when RHS goalkeeper Georgia Moore clipped the Burnside striker diving at her feet. Burnside converted to make it a lively last five minutes.

The visitors found some urgency but rather than park the bus and hold on, RHS went in search of a third goal but neither side could find the back of the net again as RHS claimed the honours after the toughest game of their season so far.

The intense final was just the warm up the side were after leading into next weeks National Premier Tournament in Nelson.

The girls meet St Peter’s (Cambridge), Diocesan (Auckland) and St Mary’s (Wellington) in pool play.

The RHS boys’ 1st XI will head to the Jim Wishart tournament in Timaru. RHS has drawn Mt Aspiring, Gisborne Boys’ and Waimate. RHS finished the boys premier competition in a fourway tie for seventh, with Lincoln beating Cashmere 2-1 in the final.
