Drink safety quiz with a fried prize

- MATTHEW SALMONS

Some North Canterbury bars are taking a novel approach to make us think about how we drink - a quiz with a prize of fries.

It involved texting the answer to one of five questions about responsible drinking, the prize voucher arriving in reply.

The idea for the Drink Smart quiz came from Lion Nathan’s Alcohol & Me group, which runs educational programmes about the effects of alcohol on the body.

Alcohol & Me programme manager Jude Walter said the quiz was designed to make safe drinking knowledge easy to access and understand.

‘‘Less than a third of kiwis know what a standard drink is ... alcohol doesn’t come with an instruction manual.’’

Walter said the body could only process one standard drink, 10mg of pure alcohol, per hour and food helped that process, making chips a perfect prize.

The quiz would run in select bars around New Zealand for the rest of the month as a trial, and may continue in more bars if effective.

Five Stags Rangiora manager Ronan Kelly was happy to see new ideas promoting a safer drinking culture.

‘‘I think it’s great to create awareness around eating, drinking and becoming more responsible hosts. If it gives people knowledge on alcohol safety ... that’s what we want too.’’
