Keep cool in hot weather

-

Although the cooling season is fairly short in most of New Zealand, there are some areas and some times, where using air conditioning regularly is a good idea.

Using a heat pump to cool an area costs a similar amount as it does to heat it, and there are ways you can cool your home without any extra expense.

Selecting an air conditioner or heat pump for your home is a major decision, as it not only involves a significant outlay, but making a good choice means comfort for your family when summer heat is at its worst.

The best units are efficient, operating on minimal electricity to hold utility bills down. They perform steadily and reliably, are long-lasting and low in service needs.

Ensure you buy one that is the right size for your home. One that is too small will not cool your home adequately, and an oversized one will turn off and on (cycle) more than necessary, putting extra strain on the compressor.

If you do need active cooling then there are ways to make sure your air conditioner or heat pump will cool effectively and as cheaply as possible.

Most heat pumps or air conditioners have a fan only setting and this can help create cross draughts in your home, particularly if you leave your windows open.

If it is the humidity rather than the temperature that is the problem, dehumidifying mode will help whilst using less electricity than the full cooling mode. Keep windows and doors closed.

Only use cooling mode on really hot days when the other methods aren’t enough. Shut all your doors and windows in the rooms you’re cooling. It’s best to just cool one room as this is what most heat pumps/ air conditioners are sized for.

Finally, choose a good contractor who will study your requirements carefully. This involves several factors: dwelling size, the way it is facing, window dimensions, local climate, shade and insulation. Dedicated airconditioner suppliers are worth talking to, as this is the nature of their expertise.
