Northern Outlook

FROM THE EDITOR

-

There been discussion around our dinner table this week about ‘stuff’. We’ve been talking about the families forced to evacuate from their homes in the wake of the Port Hills fires, and of course, remembering the chaos and upheaval of the February 2011 earthquakes.

It got me to thinking - what would I grab? And more - what would I regret not grabbing?

As I glanced around my lounge, there are so many things I’d be sad to lose. My grandmother’s china, paintings and crochet blankets done by my Mum, tapestries I’ve done over the years, drawings by the kids.

It wasn’t until I stopped and thought about it that I realised just how much I have to lose. We keep so much of our lives in our homes, it must be truly heartbreaking to have to decide in an instant what to save.

I can only pray it’s not a decision I’ll ever have to face, and hope for peace for those who do.
