Browning Shield in Kaiapoi

North Canterbury’s junior representa­tive tennis team finished their season with a loss to Malvern.

The North Canterbury 10s had a 6-5 win over their southern rivals but Malvern came out on top overall 29-12, with games played in at West Melton, Darfield and Kirwee on Sunday. Malvern were convincing winners in the 12s, 14s and 16s.

This weekend the attention goes on the open grade representa­tive honours with the annual Browning Shield to be played in Kaiapoi.

Mid Canterbury are coming north as three-time defending champions while hosts North Canterbury haven’t held the shield since the 2003-04 summer.

In the combined country open grade competitio­n, North Canterbury’s three teams have struggled to date.

A winless Kaiapoi lost to Courtenay 6-10 in a bottom-of-thetable fixture in section one.

Over in section two, the Woodend-Ashley merger were one of two games rained off when they were scheduled to meet Killinchy in Woodend.

In the Canterbury senior interclub competitio­n on Sunday, Country had an emphatic 6-0 whitewash of Cashmere to maintain thier strangleho­ld on top spot in men’s division two.

In womens division one, defending champions Country had a 4-2 win over Burwood Park.
