Bishop claims series sweep

- JONATHAN LEASK

North Canterbury surfer Tegen Bishop took out the U17 Girl’s Division and was second in the U20 Women’s Division at the New Brighton Duke Festival of Surfing. The three-day event was one of the largest held in New Zealand with over 250 entries from throughout New Zealand and overseas entries from Australia. Conditions on finals day, the Sunday, were extremely challenging with wild weather and pumping surf. In taking out the U17 Girls’ win, it also meant that Bishop (North Wai Boardriders) claimed a clean sweep to win the South Island U17 Groms Series title after winning all three rounds. The Groms title adds to Bishop’s haul this summer, winning both the Junior Women’s and Open Women’s Divisions at the 2017 Canterbury Women’s Surfing Championships earlier this month. Bishop will be in action again over Easter at the South Island Surfing Championships in Dunedin where she’ll be contesting the U17, U20 and Open Women’s Divisions.
