Tasman too good for Waimak

- JONTHAN LEASK

Waimak United had another case of missed opportunities in a 1-3 loss to Tasman United in Mainland Football’s Women’s Premier League at Kendall Park on Saturday.

After a scoreless first half, Waimak hit the lead through Emma Fellowes only for Tasman to hit straight back to level the scores. Waimak had a few more chances but couldn’t convert any, while Tasman were able to take two of their chances, adding a further two goals to sweep Waimak for the season.

It’s the toughest of finishes to the season, with Waimak at home to both Cashmere Tech and Coastal Spirit in the final two rounds – with those two sides locked in a race for the league title.

It was a tale of two halves for the Waimak United senior men in the Canterbury Championship League.

Waimak dominated the first half against Parklands to go to halftime up 2-0 with goals to Hayden Sword and Nikita Potapov.

However, Parklands hit back twice in the second half, the sec- ond in stoppage time, to draw 2-all.

Their third straight draw made it six games in a row without a loss to sit third on the table.

The men’s reserves scored a 5-2 win over Parklands with a double from Liam Walters and goals to Cameron McCracken, Tom Sharp, and Emiliano Freire-Trecu.

The Waimak PDL girls went down to Coastal 1-4 with a goal to Katelyn Bayer.

Meanwhile, the Hurunui Rangers lost 0-3 to Halswell United to slip to second behind on the league ladder, one point below Halswell United.
