Water and lifestyle in the Waimak

-

Did you know that lifestyle blocks outnumber farms by six to one in Waimakariri?

We love the rural lifestyle and proximity to the city but have we thought much about how we can play a part in improving our local waterways?

People across Waimakariri are concerned about the impact of farming on our local streams and rivers but there hasn’t been much mentioned about lifestyle block owners.

We all have a role to play when it comes to water and small changes collectively can have a huge impact.

I think, like myself, most lifestyle block owners care a great deal for the environment and that’s why they choose to live in a semi-rural setting.

It’s relaxing to wander along tracks near the river, go for a bike ride and enjoy being in nature. We want to protect the environment for future generations to enjoy.

Many semi-rural dwellers have a passion for improving waterways and want to get involved and make a difference. That’s why we choose to live here in Waimakariri.

We also want to help our children learn how to take care of the environment.

With this in mind, the Waimakariri Zone Committee is organising a pilot programme for Lifestyle Block Environment Plans and we’d love for you to get involved in the project.

There’s no cost involved and you will learn about caring for waterways, riparian planting, along with tips for caring for livestock.

At the end of the programme you’ll have a completed Lifestyle Block Environment Plan which will help you care for our environment.

The programme starts in October and will consist of three informal sessions which focus on information sharing.

We’re keen to hear your ideas and to learn from each other regarding what’s worked for you on your lifestyle block. It’s all about working together and helping each other to improve the environment.

We’ll also be covering important issues that relate to your local area such as nitrate levels in streams and the management of waterways.

This is a great opportunity to ask questions and learn more about how you can make a difference.
