Prentice picks up silver

North Canterbury athlete Navajo Prentice won silver at the recent New Zealand Road Championsh­ips.

Held at the Christchur­ch A and P Showground­s, runners faced a cold wind and drizzle in the criterium style 1km lap race.

The junior and masters women ran together over five laps.

Prentice stepped up to finish second in the women’s U20.

Natasha Mitchell came home fourth in he women’s 35 grade, and was also a key member of the Canterbury women’s quartet that took the win in the teams compe- tition.

Kaiden Turner ran in the children’s race finishing fast in fourth place.

Last month, Prentice took out the U20 title at the Canterbury Road Champs in a time of 18.46 minutes over the 5km course at at Bottlelake Forest.

Mitchell judged her race perfectly to come home first in the womens 35 grade.

Turner and Mya Phillips competed in their respective children’s grades finishing in third and 10th places respective­ly.

John Marshall (men’s 45) and Merv Burt (men’s 75) both gained second places.

At the weekend North Canterbury had Burt, Marshall and Mitchell contest the 56th running of the Governors Bay to Lyttelton 10km handicappe­d road race.

Burt was the first of the three to cross the finish line, clocking 58.42 mins which placed him 58th in the masters men’s grade on time and 29th on handicap.

Mitchell finished in a time of 42.31mins, fifth fastest in the masters women’s grade and 18th on handicap.

Marshall ran the 10mk in 37.37 mins to be 10th in the masters men’s grade on time and 49th on handicap.
