Community events across North Canterbury

- EMMA DANGERFIELD

One year since the earthquake and progress is being made, but there is still more to do, including replacing the Waiau swimming pool.

The quake destroyed both the pool and its changing rooms, and over the past year serious fundraising efforts have been undertaken to ensure the pool is rebuilt.

From charity trail rides to school mufti days, from bike rallies to the Topp Twins, significant inroads have been made towards funding the pool rebuild, which is estimated to cost between $1 and 1.2 million.

The Earthquake Destroyed School & Community Pool Givealittle page has raised close to $98,000 and events continue to fundraise for the cause.

As well as fundraising efforts for the pool, special earthquake anniversary events are also planned.

This Sunday November 12, a One Year On event will be held at the Waiau Village Green for Rotherham, Mt Lyford and the Waiau communities.

The event is free to attend and will run from 3.30pm to 8.30pm, with a range of children’s entertainment planned.

Mayor Winton Dalley will speak at 5.30pm, which will be followed by some waiata from Waiau School, and a barbecue.

A separate One Year On event will be held on Friday November 24 for the Greta Valley, Omihi and Waipara communities, starting at 5pm.

This will be held at the Scargill Domain and Cricket Pavillion, also with children’s entertainment and a barbecue.

The idea is to bring the community together to mark the anniversary of the Scargill quake/ aftershock of November 22.
