Cheviot crush Southbrook

- COUNTRY CRICKET

Leeston-Southbridge maintained their unbeaten record after clinically dispatching defending champions Sefton in round six of the CRV Ambreed Country Premier One Day cricket competition on Saturday.

Cheviot, Darfield-South Malvern (DSM), and Weedons also picked up wins as all four chasing teams prevailed.

Leeston-Southbridge (LS) won the toss and chose to bowl on an uneven and slow pitch at the Sefton Domain.

Sefton started well with Lance Taylor and Tim Harrison putting on 83 runs for the first wicket before LS’s Tim Field (3/25) made the first breakthrough by removing Harrison for 27.

Sefton then lost wickets at regular intervals, with Taylor topscoring with 53, as they struggled to be all out for 132 in the 45th over.

In reply, LS lost their openers early before Tim Gruijters (49*) compiled a good partnership with Matt Ling (29*) to get their side through to the total in the 41st over.

Cheviot destroyed Southbrook at home. Former Southbrook player Pete Rayner ripped through his old side taking 6/22 as the Southbrook capitulated to be all out for 68 in 26 overs. Shanan Stewart top-scored with 21 and Dean Power made 20.

Cheviot made short work of the chase, knocking it off in the 14th over, with Anty Burnett 36 and an unbeaten 26 from Jason Murphy, elevating them to second on the table behind LeestonSouthbridge.

DSM picked up their first win of the season at Darfield Domain beating Oxford-Rangiora by eight wickets. The visitors made 174 all out, after being 109/2. Andre Mitchell top scored with 46 while Jake Waghorn and Dave Fulton both made 26.

DSM’s top-order all fired for a comfortable eight-wicket win.

At Lincoln Domain, the home side struggled batting first against Weedons. Jeremy Benton made 46 and Dave McClelland chipped in with 25, but there were no other substantial contributions as Lincoln were all out for 126. Devon Nightingale had 4/26.

James Richards (38) anchored the Weedons chase but when he was removed by Arthur Paterson (3/18) in the 35th over, they still needed 23 runs to win, with four wickets in hand. Tom Suyker (18*) came in to strike some lofty balls and carry Weedons over the line for a two wicket win.
