Is life quality more important than work life balance?

Sometimes doing more, but more of something different can bring a greater sense of control and enhance life quality, says Jasbindar Singh.

HOW are you faring in the quest for a productive and successful work life along with a fulfilled and happy home life?

For many of us, there is a feeling of being overwhelmed as demands increase and time disappears.

Trying to balance our busy work and home lives can leave us feeling even more stressed and self-recriminating as we chase the elusive.

That is why I liked the wisdom of the authors below.

On the issue of work life balance, Betsy Collard and H.B. Gelatt in New Directions in Career Planning and the workplace: Practical strategies for Career Management Professionals edited by Jean Kummerow, offer the following thought-provoking view: • Reframing the issue in terms of life quality. The issue is not how to balance work and life but how to enrich the overall quality of life. It is about changing the focus from work to life and from balance to quality. • Identifying the two components of life quality – that is how time is spent and how you feel and think about that expenditure. What you do on a daily basis certainly is a big contributor to the quality of your life, but how you experience what you do is even more important. • Identifying the mental barriers to achieving life quality, as they can be roadblocks on the path to an enriched quality of life. • Questioning the common wisdom of simplicity. Sometimes doing more, but more of something different can bring a greater sense of control and enhance life quality. Their uncommon wisdom and unconventional strategies are: • Do more, but do something

different. • Do more of something you don’t

like. • Do the same, but do it differently. • Do more of something

“unimportant”. • Do the same but “see” it differently.

Does this resonate for you? How do you enhance your life quality? Jasbindar Singh is a leadership coach and business psychologist. www.jasbindarsingh.com
