WORKING TOGETHER

- Annie Gray

One of the interesting aspects to emerge from the annual PWC CEO survey, now in its 20th year, was that New Zealand CEOs saw new growth coming from working with other organisations to help them achieve their targets. And this was at odds with their global counterparts who intended to rely on organic growth.

PWC says 75 percent of the New Zealand CEOs it surveyed will rely on organic growth in the coming year, while the UK, Australia and the USA were all over 90 percent. Of the local CEOs, 72 percent stated they are seeking a new strategic alliance or joint venture to drive growth, compared to 48 percent globally, which is quite a marked contrast.

The CEO survey is a great tool, both locally and globally, to get a grip on what forces are driving our business leaders and where they see the future taking us. Our coverage (page 9) highlights just some of the trends the survey uncovered.

This issue we also look at how the events in the US are affecting CEOs over there, courtesy of an excellent article by INSEAD Professor N. Craig Smith who says President Trump is putting CEOs to the test. While US CEOs have stood up to oppose the immigration ban, he asks whether they will they show the same commitment to the environment. Our cover story pursues this theme from a local angle, asking what lessons our leaders here can learn from the unfolding events in the US and in Europe and what it means in terms of local leadership trends.

As always, if there is a topic you would like to see Management cover, please do let me know. Enjoy your month.
