NZ Business + Management

SHIFTING SANDS

- Annie Gray

It is hard to write something that you know will be read in about two weeks, when perhaps the world will have shifted on its axis again. As I write we are a week away from a Government decision on whether we will remain at Level 4 for longer than the four weeks or shift to Level 3. And at this point it's unclear to the general population exactly what that Level 3 will look like.

But hopefully it will mean more businesses can gradually open again and that our economy can begin what, I imagine, will be a series of small steps, taken one at a time, back to health.

But that said I don't know a single person who doesn't feel the Government did the right thing; that by moving so quickly New Zealand stands a better chance of emerging from this global phenomenon with fewer tragedies than there would otherwise have been. And that, hopefully, with a shorter shut-down period, fewer workers will be displaced in the long run.

Every industry is being impacted, not the least being the media and all at a time when clear, accurate and thoughtful coverage of daily events has never been more important. So here is a big cheer for our daily media who have done, and are continuing to do, a truly sterling job in keeping the country informed every step of the way.

This issue of Management is also focused on the pandemic and we hope there may be ideas and thinking in our series of stories on pages 8 to 16 that will offer a dash of inspiration as your organisation starts on the road back to the new normal.

And finally, we hope you like our new design for this, our first issue as a quarterly magazine. Many thanks to Cherie, our designer. And we would love your feedback.

Best wishes,
