Feed Brussels sprouts.
Crack the whip on these mini cabbages with regular doses of growth-promoting liquid fertiliser, or mulch with compost and sheep pellets. The bigger the plants are going into winter, the bigger their sprouts will be. In frost-free northern climates, Brussels sprouts have an irksome tendency to produce loose-leaf rosettes rather than tight hearts. If this bugs you, why not try ‘Kaleidoscope’ flower sprouts (Kings Seeds) instead? These colourful hybrid sprouts, a cross between kale and Brussels sprouts, bear ruffled rosettes in green, purple and pink and green. Steam or sauté, or peel the hearts apart for raw dishes.
