Snapshot: GRANT DAV I S
PAST: Grant’s dad was a professional sailor, and Grant spent most of his early life traveling the world with his family. He credits his older sisters for introducing him to two of his biggest hobbies/addictions. Caroline got him interested in cycling when he was 15 (having been a national cyclist herself); Hannah fueled a love of photography (“she studied photography in high school”). He says this has led to the “dream combo” of bikes and photography. “Traveling by bike allows you to cover enough ground that you can explore huge areas of the countryside while being slow enough to have the time to take it all in and capture its beauty.” An architectural graduate who won an Auckland Architecture award for the house he designed for his parents, he lived for two years in Aarhus, Denmark, completing a master’s in architecture and traveling throughout Scandinavia. PRESENT: Now based in Manawatū with his fiancé, Amy, Grant spends half his time working as a photographer; the other half designing spaces. “Photography is the only way architecture can travel. There are so many incredible spaces and beautiful buildings in this country and I love to help architects share their creations.”
FUTURE: “With Amy’s new role in the RNZAF, our future involves a lot of travel and many new adventures. Somewhere in the mix, we might find time to get married. I am working on growing my business throughout New Zealand while finding the balance of architecture and photography, with many bike rides in between. With the chaos that has been 2020 thus far, I am forever grateful to live in this stunning country. There is nothing a fresh roll of film, some sunshine and a two-wheeled machine can’t fix.”
