NOT GETTING INTO THE SWING OF IT

- Clare Strange, by email

About 12 years ago, when we bought a bach on 1.5ha of land, we had rosecoloured glasses and bought a scythe. It wasn’t even easy to find one. After trying it a few times we bought a weedwacker. It is beautiful watching the pros but for us mortals, using a scythe reminds me of an old sailing aphorism ‘nothing goes to windward like a 747’. Last year we sold the scythe on Trade Me for very little but were glad to find a good home for it.

I loved the cat collar (www.birdbesafe.com, NZ Lifestyle Block July 2015). I sent it on to a few friends and I don’t even like cats. What a simple and elegant solution to bird killing.
