Chives Allium schoenoprasum
THE pretty, light mauve flowers of chives have a mild onion flavour, which is very pleasant in salads. Pick them just before they open and pull individual florets off the flower head. The mild, garlic-tasting flowers of garlic chives ( Allium tuberosum) can be used in a similar way. Chives like a rich soil in full sun with plenty of water.
