Alot of trees end up as paper, but it turns out, they don’t have to. Leipa takes over one million tonnes a year of waste paper and creates something beautiful out of it. The result is sitting in your hands right now. Number of trees used in 1 tonne of magazines: 30 Number of trees used in the pages of NZ Lifestyle Block: 0

Our cover is printed on paper certified by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). PEFC is an international non-profit, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) and is the world’s largest forest certification system.

Our printers Web star use soy-based inks, a more environmentally-friendly option than traditional petroleum-based ink. The plastic that wraps around subscriber copies of NZ Lifestyle Block is manufactured using a bio-degradable additive known as TDPA (totally degradable plastic additive) which means it eventually breaks down into brittle fragments: the more exposure to UV light, heat and oxygen, the faster the process.

THIS TIME OF year always makes me wonder: how is it that the year has flown by even faster than the one before? And how is it that despite my yearly resolution to be more organised with gift-giving, I am yet again rushing around trying to think of good ideas with just weeks to go.

One thing I won’t have to worry about is gift tags for the presents I haven’t bought yet. That’s thanks to Bex, our art director. She’s the kind of person who takes an idea and turns it into something more amazing than you could have thought. When you open up this issue, you’ll see her efforts which we hope will take one Christmas must-do off your list.

Bex and her family are now living on their own block. On one of my first visits to see their new place, Bex showed me the small vegetable garden she had inherited. Her husband Phil was finding a place for his very impressive chainsaw collection.

Since then, the garden has doubled in size and production is prolific. It seems at least once a month she has a new vege bed. I forsee this new gardener is going to need to move a fence. Probably several times. Good thing the chainsaws are all ready to go.
