4 ways to give lambs the best start

-

• Have ewes lambing in paddocks that are slightly sloped (5-25˚), so there's shelter from the wind. Too steep and lambs can roll away, too flat and water pools, chilling them.

• Triplets will have a body temperature around 10˚C colder than twins at birth, so good shelter is crucial. This can be as simple as hay bales in a cross formation, which can reduce heat loss by up to 35 percent.

• Try not to disturb or move a mother and lambs away from the birthing area for up to 24 hours, to improve bonding. The longer the mother stays on the birth site, the better the bond. Ideally, have a mother of multiples in a paddock close to your home, barn, or a pen so it's easy to check on her.

• If a ewe has triplets, it's best to bottle-feed the smallest triplet – this can be supplemental (you'll need to get the triplet used to being handled), or you can remove the triplet from its mother and exclusively bottle-feed it.
