NZ Performance Car : Hey, Doyle. We hear this was your first proper car. Tell us how long you’ve had it and what made you want to buy it.

Doyle: Yo, NZPC. Yeah this is my first proper build. I bought it when I was 18 and have been building it to my taste ever since. The JZX is so reliable, a proven setup that can make easy power. I’m all about being able to take the boys out for cruises, so a four-door was a must, and, at the time, it was something different that not many people in New Zealand owned.

What was the aim for the car when you started?

I aimed to make a modest 230kW or so, retaining as many factory components as possible in doing it, and keep the factory aero and body lines. I’ve found myself well exceeding the power aim, now making 346kW on 18psi, thanks to a few good bolt-ons like the TD06 with a Holset core and the Sinco manifold. But I’m happy I’ve kept the factory aero and lines, which is one of the best features of the JZX100 in my opinion.

Sure looks good, man. Did being a panel beater by trade help with the build?

Oh, it’s helped immensely, being able to carry out all the fabrication and panel work required. The ability to chop and change the colour, and the style of the car, whenever I feel [like it] is something you just can’t beat. I have to throw out a huge shout out to my colleague Riz for the countless hours helping me prep the car for paint and laying the paintwork itself though!

Solid — credit where it’s due! How does it mostly get used?

It’s mainly used for those weekend cruises with the boys and does the odd track day, although I feel it’s just too clean now to abuse at the track on a regular basis.

Fair call. What are your thoughts on how people modify JZX chassis here?

Now that they’re a lot more popular, I feel that most take the same route when it comes to modifying their JZX100. By all means that’s fine, but it would be cool to see some different styles around, ya know? When building mine, I didn’t really look in a specific direction for inspiration; it all just kind of happened, finding parts along the way that I thought would be a cool touch to the car.

And do you have any plans for the future?

I plan on running a water-meth system, then some cams and a bigger turbo to achieve that mid-400kW mark. New wheels are definitely on the cards and probably a new colour for the car — fingers crossed 2019 goes well and I can achieve these goals.

Best of luck, Doyle. Cheers for the yarn.
