A 5.5m wide tunnel between the two main halls left only inches to spare for cars to slide through

Covid-19 has changed the world in more ways than we can even imagine. Constraint can be a catalyst for creativity — providing strict, never-thought-of-before parameters in which to operate. D1NZ was most certainly no exception to the rule. With the season turned on its head, it was up to Brendon White to think of a new way in which to complete the remaining two rounds of the five-part series post lockdown. Surrounded by a talented team of individuals, D1NZ managed to pull off an all-new way to consume drifting — punchy, theatrical, live TV. Sky TV no less!

“Covid kicked us in the nuts,” Brendon White tells us. “When the government told us we would only have limited numbers on-site, it really put us back. It meant I needed to rethink our structure and people on-site, in order to deliver an event.”

However, the reduced number on-site meant that the D1NZ team was able to open up interactive elements never thought of before. The restrictions also opened up venues that would have otherwise been well booked, or simply overlooked — such as the halls of ASB Showgrounds.

“We have worked with Dean from ASB Showgrounds through various shows for many years and he’s a motorsport nut just like us, so everyone got stuck in and made the best of a bad situation,” Brendon continues. “It allowed us to future-proof the sport, so that, if we did go back to a restriction of sorts, we can still deliver fans an epic TV product and stay operational.”
