ICON FJ LAND CRUISER
To celebrate the company’s tenth anniversary in 2018, US custom car specialist Icon 4x4 has created an ‘Old School’ Series. These builds split the difference between the company’s traditional TLC concours-level 4x4 restorations and full-blown, no-parts-left-unmodified full Icon builds. The first Old School Icon build ( first shown at the 2017 SEMA Show in Las Vegas) is a 1970 FJ40 Land Cruiser with a body hand- crafted in 5052- grade aluminum, then powder coated in a proprietary finish. In keeping with the strict Old School ethos Icon has colourmatched the custom alloy wheels and added hubcaps to mimic the originals as well as rendered the updated stainless steel badges in a manner reminiscent of the original Toyota 1960’s design. Under- the- skin components generally follow Icon’s tried/ true formula though this time motive power comes not from a fire- breathing LS- series V8 but a Cummins R2.8L Turbo Diesel in- line four cylinder, mated to an AX-15 5- speed manual transmission and t wo- speed Advance Adapters Atlas II transfer case. The suspension carries over from existing Icon FJs with remote- reservoir, nitrogencharged Fox Racing coilovers at each corner. Adjustable spring rates and shock valving were engineered specially for ICON FJs to provide the best blend of on- road comfort and control with off- road travel and articulation. Axles are Dynatrac ProRock models: Dana 44 front, Dana 60 rear. Both have ARB Air Lockers and 4.09 gears. They turn 285/ 65R18 BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/ A KO2 tires. Stopping power is provided by Brembo sport brakes that are hydro-boosted with powersteering pressure instead of with engine vacuum. The power steering system uses high-flow PSC components to improve steering feel. Old School Icon Land Cruisers will be offered in all four existing body styles: FJ40, FJ43, FJ44 and FJ45.
