18-SECOND EIGHTHMILE PASSES ARE A FAR CRY FROM TODAY’S QUARTER-MILE PB OF 8.55S AT 153MPH

Twenty-five-year-old Stacey Price lists her racing goal as becoming the quickest and fastest female in New Zealand, and we’d say she’s heading in the right direction. While these days she can be found driving Andy Chapman’s ’23 T altered, she’s got a far more powerful car in the build to help her achieve her ambition. Having grown up with a father who’s been in the racing scene for 35 years, though, Stacey knows she’s got to take things slowly, and that slow start happened when she was just eight years old, behind the wheel of a junior dragster. The 18-second eighth-mile passes are a far cry from today’s quarter-mile PB of 8.55s at 153mph in the altered. Even with eight-second passes now the norm, rather than jump straight into the 521ci supercharged Hemi-powered funny car, Stacey and the team have added an extra step in between. That step will be to compete a recently purchased Weldwell Engineering–built altered from Australia. The new car has many features similar to the setup of the funny car, making it the perfect transition vehicle. Stacey’s partner, Shane Allen, has an equal love of horsepower, and is a highly ranked drifter behind the wheel of the Rattla Motorsport Mustang and Falcon. While Stacey has yet to drive the Rattla cars, she’s quite keen to give them a go after a few years on the sidelines. Of course, drag racing is in her blood and is her first true love, with her next goal being to take the A/MA national record, which she’s currently close to in the Chapman altered, thanks to its 355ci naturally aspirated fuelinjected engine. The move to the new altered should not only see that goal become a reality, but give Stacey valuable experience for the move to the funny car. It also allows a couple more years for the funny car to be completed. Watch this space.
