- STAFF REPORTER

Cycling: New Zealand rider James Oram is the new tour leader after another Australian won stage two of the New Zealand Cycle Classic in Wairarapa yesterday.

Victorian Sam Crome powered to victory in the rolling 147.5km stage from Masterton to Gladstone, which finished with a steep climb up Admiral Hill. It followed the deeds of his IsoWhey Sports SwissWellness teammate Tim Roe, who won the opening stage.

Oram, riding for the New Zealand National team was 7sec behind Crome. It was enough to put him 10sec ahead of the Australian on general classification. — NZN TOP New Zealand para skiers Adam Hall and Corey Peters will line up at the World Para Alpine Skiing Championships in Tarvisio, Italy, this week.

More than 100 athletes will compete in the event — Hall, of Wanaka, in the men’s standing events and Peters, of New Plymouth, in the sitting events.

Both members of the Cardrona New Zealand para alpine ski team have recently competed at world cups in Austria and Slovenia and believe they are well prepared to compete against the world’s best.

‘‘We’ve had some very tight and exciting racing over the last couple of weeks since arriving in Europe,’’ Hall said.

‘‘Innerkrems [in Austria] had some challenges with the weather, being pretty windy, which in turn meant a mixed bag of lowered starts and shorter races than the world cup norm and a cancelled race.

‘‘The last couple of days again meant for tight racing in Kranjska Gora [Slovenia] where I finished in fourth place in both slaloms, keeping things exciting.

‘‘In those races I was third and second after the first run and each race to this point has been decided by hundredths and tenths of seconds.

‘‘The world cups have given me a chance to tinker and dial in a few things going into this next week. I can’t wait for it to all begin.’’

Peters claimed his first world titles in superG and downhill two years ago in Panorama, Canada, and is focused on defending them.

Two days of downhill training will be undertaken before the first medals will be contested later this week.
