Minister’s assurances on oil exploration
I READ with utter horror (ODT, 23.3.17) the proposals to allow oil/gas exploration in the area of Western Southland Basin, which nudges up against the Fiordland National Park and runs along part of the dramatic southern coast, including Te Waewae Bay. Is there nothing that this rightwing government will not sacrifice to its big business supporters and party funders?
There are no recovery services in New Zealand to deal with an oil spill. Any oil spill in sensitive conservation or pristine areas will be catastrophic. Also, global warming and the over use of fossil fuels is becoming apparent to even the most sceptical of critics.
The slogan ‘‘100% clean, green New Zealand’’ should be replaced with ‘‘100% up for sale and never mind the consequences New Zealand!’’

Concord [Energy and Resources Minister Judith Collins replies: ‘‘The Government supports oil and gas development in New Zealand for the economic benefits it brings — including hundreds of millions in royalties for the Crown and highlyskilled, wellpaid jobs. A discovery in Southland could be a real boost to the region. But it’s not about development at any cost. The Government attracts worldclass petroleum explorers, which includes making sure they have the capability to respond in the rare case of an oil spill.
‘‘There’s also a series of strict environmental and health and safety regulatory hurdles that oil and gas explorers have to meet. For example, onshore petroleum drilling would require resource consent from the local council, which weighs the economic benefits and environmental risk of an activity. As part of this process, explorers will have to prove that they can minimise and manage any spills. Doc permission is required for any activity on conservation land.’’]
