Show us why you love...

-

IN launching our latest photograph contest yesterday, I urged readers to use their imagination when trying to capture, in a single photo, the essence of why they love where they live.

So, it was really pleasing to see that advice was heeded by the first entrants who have opted to show their favourite views of Dunedin — one taken this week and the other, well, quite some time ago.

Let’s start with the latter. It was sent in by Isobel Bouman ,of Roslyn, who explains why she loves it:

‘‘Dave. This was a slide I took back home with me to Scotland in 1962 as I wanted my family to see how beautiful Dunedin is. I put it on my Facebook [page] last year and [there were] the praises and ‘oh my gosh Isobel, is this where you live?; It’s beautiful.’

‘‘When I look at it I love the feeling of how land, sea, and sky merge, making me very happy that I am where I am.’’

Thanks Isobel. I wonder how many changes to this vista readers can spot more than 50 years on? It still remains a fabulous view of the city.

Our second entry, from Errol Holland, also of Roslyn, fastforwards us to the present day. He writes:

‘‘A wonderful walk and explore in the Town Belt yesterday. We sat on a gifted seat for our lunch, from where this photo is taken, thinking how fortunate we are to live in a city of such beauty with walks and paths so close to our homes and the city.

‘‘I have lived in Dunedin for a long number of years and am still surprised to find new paths and vistas of wellknown landmarks from new places.’’

So, there you are, a couple of good examples of what we are seeking. But, as we suggested yesterday, readers may also opt for a different or rarelyseen angle of an iconic structure in their town, or a special person or group of people. It’s up to you.

Here’s all you have to do to enter:

Email us your photo (one please), earmarked ‘‘My city, my town’’ to thewash@odt.co.nz.

Provide an explanation (briefish) of the photo’s contents, including the names of anyone pictured, and where and when it was taken.

Include your name, address and a contact phone number.

We will publish a selection of entries in The Wash and also on ODT Online and then decide which photos ‘‘get the chocolates’’, so to speak!
