WORKSAFE has been notified after a man was hit by a truck and fell into a pit in Cromwell yesterday.

The man (60) was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital in a serious condition after the incident at the Cromwell transfer station in Barry Ave.

A police spokeswoman said emergency services were notified shortly before 11.30am.

The brigade sent two vehicles to assist the ambulance.

Central Otago District Council chief executive Leanne Mash said it was too early to comment on the incident.

About 5pm yesterday the council said the station was closed until further notice. It advised using the Alexandra station in Boundary Rd in the meantime.
