Frew recovered and eager for redemption

STEEL captain Wendy Frew will take a few more scars into the final of the ANZ Premiership — most of them physical.

The Steel captain was one of four players who missed the match against the Tactix in Christchurch earlier this month when the team’s van was involved in an accident.

She sustained cuts to her elbow and left leg but is fit and available for tonight’s final against the Pulse in Invercargill.

The experienced wing defence will be joined by goal shooter Te Paea SelbyRickit, who has also been sidelined since the accident.

The pair will boost the home team’s prospects and Frew is looking forward to the occasion.

Redemption is one motivating factor. The Steel was the hot favourite to beat the Magic in the conference final of the now defunct transtasman tournament last season, but it was stunned 5957.

Frew hates to lose but is able to fall back on some happier mem ories as well. She was part of four successful campaigns with the Sting.

‘‘I think there are just so many motivating factors for this game,’’ she said.

‘‘It is exciting to know I’ve been in this situation before but, to be honest, that was a long, long time ago. You see photos here and there that give you goosebumps and I certainly want to make sure we have those memories again.’’

Frew felt the team may have ‘‘got a bit ahead of itself’’ last season but will not fall into that trap again.

‘‘It has been brought up a lot in interviews this week and that helps keep you grounded which is a really good thing.’’

A win tonight would perhaps be a nice way for Frew to leave the game. The 32yearold has a young family and is nearing the end of her netball career.

‘‘It is going to be a tough decision when I make it but, at the same time, I’m certainly still loving it.

‘‘Let’s see what happens [tonight] and see what comes of that, I suppose.’’
