Man charged for not identifying driver

POLICE have charged a man with failing to identify the driver responsible for illegally dumping furniture in the central city earlier this year.

The 36yearold Dunedin man has been summonsed to appear in the Dunedin District Court to face two charges relating to the offence after CCTV caught a green Toyota Prado being driven erratically in Vogel St on May 7, shaking derelict furniture from its trailer.

The vehicle careered around the corner from Gordon St to dump the unsecured furniture at 2pm and 6pm on the day in question.

Sergeant Graeme Evans said officers served notice on the vehicle’s owner to identify the driver responsible for the dumping on June 9.

The man had a fortnight to do so, but when contacted again by police he was not forthcoming.

‘‘He was asked to give information that would identify the driver and he has declined to do that, allegedly,’’ Sgt Evans said.

Otago Coastal road policing manager Senior Sergeant Steve Larking previously told the Otago Daily Times, when spoken to, the man accepted it was his vehicle, trailer and furniture, but denied being the driver of the vehicle when the two dumpings took place.

The maximum penalty for the offence is a $20,000 fine.

The man is due to appear in the Dunedin District Court on August 2.
