Alexandra District Court

-

A RANFURLY man convicted of assault has been told to ‘‘get some help’’ for any issues he has.

Yevahni Karah Stringer (22), shearer, was sentenced by Judge Dominic Flatley in the Alexandra District Court this week to 12 months’ intensive supervision on two charges.

Stringer had admitted a charge of male assaults female in Ranfurly on December 12, and operating a vehicle with sustained loss of traction in Ranfurly on January 29.

Defence counsel Russell Checketts said Stringer had previously had an unblemished record, but had been seriously affected by the death of a friend and started offending after that.

Judge Flatley said alcohol had been a factor in the December 12 assault, when Stringer had dragged and pushed his victim and kicked her in the thigh.

Stringer had been ‘‘spiralling out of control’’ and needed to get help for any issues he had.

Stringer was also disqualified from driving for six months from January 23, 2018, and Judge Flatley also cancelled a previous sentence of community work imposed for previous convictions, and reimposed a sentence of 200 hours’ community work, which amounted to about 100 new hours.

Community detention

An Omahu, Waikato man with a history of offending was sentenced to four months’ community detention on two charges.

Adam Forde Ruki (28) had admitted unlawfully interfering with a motor vehicle in Hastings between February 47 and breaching bail conditions in Hastings on May 9.

Judge Flatley said Ruki had a ‘‘fairly bad list’’ of previous convictions and had been assessed as being at a high risk of reoffending.

Ruki had said he did not want to take part in any counselling, but Judge Flatley said his cycle of offending needed to be broken.

Ruki was also sentenced to 12 months’ intensive supervision, and ordered to undergo drug and alcohol counselling and any other intervention as directed.

$2500 reparation

A Roxburgh man was ordered to pay $2500 reparation when sentenced on three charges.

Sam Bradley Johnston (21) had admitted driving with a breath alcohol level of 534mcg, careless driving and failing to stop to ascertain injury, in Dunedin on June 17.

He had crashed into another car and kept driving until he was stopped by police.

Judge Flatley said it was lucky he had been stopped, and noone had been injured by his driving.

Johnston was fined $550, disqualified from driving for nine months and ordered to pay $2500 reparation and $140 court costs.
