Second child abduction attempt

OAMARU police are investigating a second attempted child abduction in less than four weeks.

A police spokeswoman confirmed that on Saturday afternoon an 11yearold boy evaded a man who tried to get him into a van at the intersection of Pembroke St and Raglan St, Oamaru.

In a statement, Sergeant Blair Wilkinson, of Oamaru, said the boy did not know the man.

Detective Kevin Kirkman, of Oamaru, who is investigating the alleged attempted abduction, believed the two incidents were not linked.

‘‘There’s nothing that’s strikingly similar.’’

On August 17, it was alleged a 12yearold girl was walking on Solway St towards Salesyard Rd, Oamaru, when she was stopped by a man who tried to get her into his red utility vehicle.

Sgt Wilkinson said police were yet to identify the van and man involved in the latest alleged attempted abduction.

The man was described as Caucasian, but with olive skin.

He was believed to be aged in his 60s, had a ‘‘deep angry voice’’, and was believed to be wearing a black beanie and a black shortsleeved Tshirt.

The van was described as a green, 1980s Japanese model, with a flat front. The paint on its roof was peeling.

The police would like anyone with details on a registration number of the van to contact them.
