UFO house to stay in Warrington; seller ‘over the moon’

- TIMOTHY BROWN timothy.brown@odt.co.nz

THE owner of Dunedin’s UFO house is ‘‘over the moon’’ she has found a buyer who absolutely loves the structure.

The flying saucershaped Futuro home in Park Rd, Warrington, has sold only two weeks after it was listed on Trade Me on September 4.

In that time the listing had generated almost 50,000 views and yielded offers from potential buyers around the world.

The home was owned in trust by Christchurch woman Juanita Clearwater and her family. She had bought the rare onebedroom, onebathroom house from Auckland businessman Grant Major about 2013.

Mrs Clearwater said the buyer was an Australian doctor, who intended to use it as a holiday home.

It was not the highest offer she received for the home, however, the doctor’s willingness for unconditional purchase and his love for Futuros and intention to keep it in Warrington proved the difference.

‘‘This was a clean, unconditional sale — he just wanted it,’’ she said.

‘‘I’m over the moon.’’

The outofthisworld design was conceived by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen in 1968, and built under licence in Christchurch in 1972.

It was likely first used at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, before being refitted as a house and relocated to Warrington in 1975.
