21yearold appointed to Sport Otago development role

- BILL TREWERN

RYAN Rosevear has been appointed as the Sport Otago development officer for golf and will take up the position on November 8.

He is the third golfer to fill this role which began when Michael Smith was appointed in 2009, while Michael Ormandy vacated the position last month.

Rosevear (21) is at present studying for a degree in Physical Education with honours at the University of Otago.

His research for his thesis is on ‘‘talent identification and development’’, an area which fits the bill for his tasks in his new role.

Rosevear also brings leader ship skills to the position, as he was head prefect at Taieri College in 2013.

He started playing golf on the Taieri Lakes course in North Taieri at the age of 12 when he was in year 8 at the college.

He has a handicap of eight but has not played much during the winter, as his studies have come first.

‘‘I am looking forward to starting the job and getting out on the course again during the summer months,’’ he said.

Rosevear is an avid sports fan and has an interest in many sports.

‘‘My favourite hobby is reading about top athletes, their careers and what makes them tick.’’

Sport Otago community sport manager Alan Nicholls was pleased to have Rosevear on board as he had the necessary skills and fitted the age demographic it was keen to promote in golf and in sport.
