Protrusions ‘cyclistkilling measure’ not ‘trafficcalming measure’

-

AS a cyclist, I am pleased to see many of the roads in Dunedin are being made much safer for cyclists, although as a motorist in some cases I think the measures taken are somewhat excessive.

However, as a cyclist I am greatly concerned that some other roads are being made more dangerous for cyclists. For example, of the new road layout at the intersection of South Rd and Playfair St in Caversham. The protrusion into the street from the footpath will be called a ‘‘trafficcalming measure’’ when in fact it is potentially a ‘‘cyclistkilling measure’’! James Irwin

Delta contract

THE reply (ODT, 1.10.17) from Steve Thompson to my letter concerning the extra benefits paid to Grady Cameron of Delta over and above his salary avoids the issue raised of the contract offered being inappropriately considered. By deduction there was apparently:— No executive comparator looked at (e.g. Fulton Hogan CEO/Wanganui CEO etc), no performance measures/ hurdles for justification of any increase (e.g. an improved return over the previous year or a reduction in liabilities ), no basis for management improvements (losses everywhere and substantial pay increases above inflation) no policy reasons for any increase (e.g. staff retentions/superannuation concerns) — and in fact nothing at all to warrant the extra reward unless mateship be a factor.

That DCHL has set out its expectations for remuneration in its companies hopefully means that it has now rectified its inadequate process illustrated by the Grady Cameron case where the proper course should have been to terminate his contract by exercise of its dismissal powers (it is assumed these at least should have had been written into its contract) and not let matters drag on for over half a year. It also failed, it would appear, to keep our councillors adequately informed who are, as it were, our shareholders in this company. Not a good show.

We do not want any repeat of this lack of governance by our appointed directors. Murray Hanan
