Gyms team up for mental health

- SEAN NUGENT

TWO Wanaka gyms are taking steps to help the community tackle mental health over the Christmas period.

The Fit Collective and CrossFit Wanaka have partnered to raise funds for the Central Lakes Mental Health Team and help support their initiatives for those struggling with mental illness, depression and anxiety in the Upper Clutha area.

The mental health team provides a mixture of assessment, therapies and community support to assist those in need.

The team welcomed the support from both gyms, and encour aged people who were going through a tough time to engage in exercise.

‘‘Thirty minutes of moderate intensity physical exercise activity on most days of the week can have mental health benefits, particularly for depression and anxiety, and is excellent for reducing stress,’’ team manager Jo Harry said.

‘‘Exercise releases moodenhancing chemicals, improves muscle and heart function, increasing blood flow to the brain and this, in turn, increases the efficiency of brain chemicals and improves selfesteem and increases social interaction.’’

Fit Collective will host a fund raising event for the team tomorrow.

Manager Kim Parry said they wanted to create a fundraiser that both got people moving and supported a valuable group in the community.

‘‘One of our core values is community so supporting the Central Lakes Mental Health Team is so important to us and the team at CrossFit.’’

She hoped families would come along and participate in a workout together.

Spot prizes have been provided by more than a dozen local businesses, and a free barbecue will be offered afterwards.

The event starts at 9am.
