City intersection cameras set up

- STAFF REPORTER

CAMERAS trained on motorists are popping up all around Dunedin.

The cameras, being installed by the Dunedin City Council and NZ Transport Agency, are being installed on top of traffic lights at 30 of the city’s busiest intersections.

The transport agency is installing 18 of the cameras on state highways through the city and the council is installing 12 on city roads.

The cameras, which also come with a small dish, cost about $5000 each, and about $5000 to $10,000 each to install.

Dunedin City Council transport safety team leader Hjarne Poulsen said the primary reason for the cameras was to improve efficiency at the intersections.

The cameras would monitor traffic signal operations at the intersections and could be used to inform the remote control of signals, when required.

Footage from the cameras would be held by the transport agency.

A transport agency spokeswoman confirmed police could request footage from the agency to review a crash or other event that might be captured on them and the footage could be used in police prosecutions.

Six cameras have already been installed: at the Portsmouth DrOrari St intersection; George StLondon St intersection; State Highway 1Andersons Bay Rd; SH1Southern Motorway; Gordon RdInglis St intersection and the Gordon RdBurns St intersection.
