Green Island 202 for nine beat CarisbrookDunedin 65

Veteran Green Island seamer Dion Lobb claimed his 800th wicket and helped his team win the Declaration Cup with a comprehensive 137run win against CarisbrookDunedin.

Lobb (37) went into the game poised on 796 wickets and produced yet another stunning performance, taking five for 17 from 11 overs to help dismiss CarisbrookDunedin for a paltry 65 at Tonga Park.

The rightarmer made his debut for the senior side in 1998 and is the club’s leading wickettaker, overhauling Grant Payne’s career haul of 649 wickets in 201516.

Lobb played one firstclass game for Otago — against Auckland in 2007, taking one for 37.

On Saturday he was too good for the CarisbrookDunedin batting lineup. Only Rhys Phillips (28) and Jamie McFarland (11) managed to reach double figures.

Earlier, Green Island posted 202 for nine. Geordie Scott topscored with 58 from 59.

Green Island started the final round in third place and had some luck to come through and win the Declaration Cup, after the topofthetable match between North East Valley and Taieri was abandoned.

Kaikorai 132 beat Albion 82

Otago and Kaikorai legspinner Michael Rippon warmed up for the Plunket Shield with a stunning eightwicket bag to help his side beat Albion by 50 runs.

The ball dominated bat at Bishopscourt as Kaikorai limped to 132 from 26.3 overs.

Daniel Duke was the chief destroyer for Albion, taking five for 23 from 4.3 overs, while Volts allrounder Shawn Hicks took three for 32.

Rippon and Taine Bayly topscored with the modest score of 26 each. Having got a few runs, Rippon went to work with the ball.

He bowled opener Taylor Cumberland third ball. Seamer Ryan Whelan got the key wicket of Hicks in the next over then Rippon was back into the action.

He trapped Duke lbw for eight and the wickets kept coming. No 10 Matt West put up a fight at the end with 21 before he, too, was undone by Rippon. Albion had crashed to be all out for 82.

Rippon’s eightwicket bag follows the eightwicket haul by CarisbrookDunedin’s Kurt Johnston a week earlier.

History of the Dunedin Cricket Club author Russell Hendry believes Frank Cameron’s haul of 10 for 66 in 196869 is probably the best return in Dunedin senior club cricket.

Another outstanding effort came from Green Island’s Lobb, who took nine for 15 against Otago Boys’ High School in March 2014.

OAMARU: Southland won the right to be the zone four challenger for the Hawke Cup, held by CountiesManukau, when it beat North Otago in Oamaru at the weekend after both sides went into the game tied on 32 points.

North Otago was given the task of scoring 143 runs in 19 overs in its second innings but Southland established a circular defensive pattern with fielders posted around the boundary.

It worked — North Otago needed 143 runs in 19 overs but was restricted to 118 for eight wickets.

Jeremy Smith topscored with 33.

For Southland, Jason Osborne took two for 28 and Ben Lockrose, three for 29.

Heavy rain had delayed the start of the game.

North Otago’s Craig Smith won the toss and put Southland in, a decision that favoured North Otago. Southland slumped to 32 for three as Hamish Kelt, Venkat Kotte and Jared McKenzie were dismissed by Francois Mostert and Craig Smith.

Mostert finished the innings with six for 63 off 24 overs as Southland was all out for 156.

North Otago lost opener Duncan Drew early and the Southland attack, guided by Jacob Duffy, who took three wickets, had the home side staggering at stumps on the first day at 80 for five, needing 77 further runs to take firstinnings points.

On the second day, Southland bowled only 11 balls before the umpires decided the heavy dew was affecting play. North Otago was on 85 for five.

When play resumed, North Otago was all out for 136.

North Otago struck back in Southland’s second innings and went to tea on the final day with Southland on 87 for two, an overall lead of 107 runs, with 36 overs remaining in the game.

Southland was dismissed for 122, giving North Otago the task of scoring 143 runs in 19 overs.
